JOB DESCRIPTION

The Director of Brokerage is responsible for the direction and oversight of the Freight Brokerage department, including, but not limited to operational staff consisting of freight brokers and administrative staff. The ideal candidate for this position must have experience overseeing freight brokerage operations, building and managing a freight brokerage sales team, and growing a freight brokerage department or company. This position requires existing relationships with multiple local and regional carriers and the ability to identify and contact qualified carriers for freight services.

The Director of Brokerage must be knowledgeable of current industry trends and regulations including FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Administration), DOT (Department of Transportation), and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations. This person must be able to pro-actively identify and communicate issues and propose and implement solutions for continuous improvement as they pertain to processes, cost, service, and profitability. This includes having a broad experience in the trucking and logistics field to be able to effectively answer and train staff members as needed.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Building a team of great freight brokers to deliver results.
  • Maintaining strong relationships with multiple carriers.
  • Negotiating contracts and pricing agreements with carriers.
  • Setting the direction and tone of the department while bringing the energy, grit, and work ethic necessary to elevate department effectiveness and productivity.
  • Sourcing and negotiating with qualified carriers to move freight
  • Managing carrier updates, communications, and movements
  • Maintaining documentation to ensure compliance standards are met
  • Developing carrier performance and satisfaction metrics and understanding matters related to P&Ls
  • Ensuring the work environment is customer focused, positive and based on trust and respect.
  • Maintaining a high degree of confidentiality with issues related to staff (private and personal matters), rates, customers, and other proprietary items.
  • Properly communicating company policies and plans to all associates and communicate employee feedback to upper management.
  • Supervising key staff to monitor operations ensuring workload is completed per customer expectations: efficiently, safely and compliant with all applicable regulations
  • Collaborating with other managers and staff to formulate and implement policies, procedures, goals, and objectives
  • Collaborating with accounting staff and sales team to monitor timely payments

  • Extensive knowledge of the Freight Brokerage and Transportation Industry
  • Experience managing brokers and administrative personnel
